Frank Oppenheimer's 1969 Exploratorium was the template that every children's science museum since has copied. Six galleries, more than 600 exhibits, all of them are designed to be touched and operated. The outdoor portion along the Embarcadero — the Wave Organ, the bay bridge sound mirrors — is free to anyone walking by.
